Dear Angus

Thank you for drawing this to my attention. I have had to take up a new parttime job to make ends meet in anticipation of the inflationary pressures on the economy. So I know every one has to do the same if like me their pension is not sufficient to pay the bills. The government does not have money. It has to tax the rich but that will kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. So I cannot sign this petition.

My concern is freedom to think and act to make a better world. But we live in a Police State where the Police has written to me that following my arrest as a person who allegedly stalked Some one at and harassed her I have been kept under investigation. My wife has asked me to wait for anther two months before I chase up our joint complaint of unlawful detention. So there is nothing I can do for now like activism until the Police make a decision.

I hope you understand

Shantanu Panigrahi

Dr Shantanu, it’s official – we’re in a cost of living crisis. Inflation has jumped to 5.1%, meaning prices are going up at the fastest rate in 10 years. [1]

Energy bills are at the heart of this crisis. The soaring cost of gas and electricity was named as a key cost stretching household finances. [2] Yet, the Government hasn’t stepped in to help keep the heating on. The Warm Homes Discount Scheme – a payment to help low income families stop their homes going cold over winter – hasn’t increased for almost a decade. [3]

As we head into the coldest months of the year, heating your home isn’t optional. That’s why tens of thousands of us are asking the Government to increase the amount families can claim through the Warm Homes Discount to ensure no one goes cold this winter.

Dr Shantanu will you add your name alongside 105,000 others to persuade the Government to do more to support people through the winter?

Here’s the previous email that we sent:

Dr Shantanu, winter is coming, and millions of us are facing a surge in our energy bills. The average customer could see their bills rise by hundreds of pounds a year, and for low income households it could be much more. [1] People all over the country could be left with an impossible choice: whether to “eat or heat”.

Support that is available doesn’t go nearly far enough. The Warm Home Discount Scheme, designed to help low income households keep warm over winter, has been fixed for almost a decade. [2] Despite rumours of a small raise, experts like Martin Lewis are pushing for much more. It’s time for us to join them. [3]

We need MPs to take urgent action, and if enough of us sign the petition today, we can focus their attention on protecting their constituents from going cold this winter. And we’ll show them how to do it: by raising the Warm Home Discount Scheme payment.

So, Dr Shantanu will you sign the petition today calling on the Government to substantially increase the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

I'M NOT SIGNING THIS PETITION BECAUSE...

In one of the richest countries in the world, no one should have to choose between food and heat. Sadly it is a choice that is becoming increasingly common. [4] This is a crisis that is only going to get worse the longer it is ignored, so we need to take action now.

Together, we’ve stood up time and time again for all those affected by rising living costs. In the past few months alone we've been pushing for energy companies to keep prices low, and calling on the Government to scrap plans to cut Universal Credit. [5] Now, we can unite again to increase support for those affected by the energy crisis.

So, Dr Shantanu will you sign the petition to help those on low incomes stay warm this winter?
